E|ther [griech. aithe̅̓r = obere Luft, Himmelsluft; vgl. Äther (1)], der; -s, -; veraltete S: Äther:
1) Gruppenbez. für org. Verb. der allg. Formel R1—O—R2, wobei man einfache oder symmetrische (R1 = R2, z. B. Diethylether), gemischte oder unsymmetrische Ether (z. B. Butyl-methyl-ether) u. Phenolether (z. B. Anisol) unterscheidet; cyclische E. sind z. B. Tetrahydrofuran u. Dioxan. Die Benennung der E. erfolgt durch Substitutionsnamen mit dem Infix ↑ -oxy- in Alkoxy- bzw. Aryloxypräfixen (z. B. Methoxyanilin), durch Funktionsklassenamen mit der Funktionsbez. -ether, seltener auch mit -oxid (Diphenylether = Diphenyloxid) oder durch Austauschnamen mit ↑ Oxa-. Das Verbindungsglied —O— nennt man Etherbrücke;
2) gemeinspr. Bez. für ↑ Diethylether.
